Bomb Strikes In Anti Bomb Squad Building, killing 4

Scores killed in Adamawa Police station bomb blast

Yola—Scores of people, mainly police personnel, were feared killed yesterday, as bomb blast rocked the Anti-Bomb squad building of the Adamawa State Police Command.

However, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, confirmed four persons dead in the the blast, said to be an accidental explosion.

A statement by Mr. Sani Datti, Senior Information Officer, NEMA, in Abuja, said the explosion occurred at about noon and the injured persons taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.

According to the statement, nearby Jimeta Primary School, Post Office, old NITEL building and some neighbouring houses were affected.

The Anti-Bomb squad building houses Jimeta Divisional Police station, state investigation Bureau SIB, and the central motor Traffic Division, MTD of the state police command among other arms of the police.

All the roofs and structures of the building were completely shattered by the blast.

As at 2pm yesterday, thick smoke was still bellowing from the burning offices, even as security operatives including officials of NEMA, Red Cross and others were yet to have access into the scene.

Accident vehicles parked in the premises were all gutted by fire as explosion from burning tyres and petrol tanks created heightened anxiety for residents around the area.

When Vanguard visited the scene moment after the blast, there was total confusion as security personnel and others scampered for safety over fear of another blast.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP, Mohammed Ghazali, told newsmen at the scene of the blast that it might have been caused by bombs confiscated from suspected Boko Haram insurgents kept in the stores of the Anti-Bomb disposal unit.

When asked about the casualty figure of the blast, the commissioner noted that he could not give the exact figure as the fire ignited by the bomb was yet to be extinguished raising fear of another possible blast.
