FG Shortlists Three for Vacant UBTH CMD Position

THREE candidates including the acting Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Dr Darlington Obaseki, have been shortlisted for the vacant position of the Chief Medical Director of the hospital by the Federal Government.

The other two include Prof. Sylvester Idogun and Dr Cashmir Omuemu. The 11 persons who were earlier in the race were interviewed for the position by the Federal Ministry of Health but three were shortlisted after the interview. The acting President is expected to pick one out of the three for the CMD position.

Meanwhile, the people of Edo North senatorial district have appealed to the Federal Government to cede the position to the area by appointing Prof. Idogun in the interest of equity and fair play.

While Prof. Idogun is from Edo North, the duo of Dr Obaseki and Dr Omuemu are from Edo South senatorial district of Edo State.

But Edo North people through the Afemai Renaissance Group, in a statement by its President, Prof. Don Momodu, said that Edo Central and South senatorial districts have produced the CMDs of the hospital in the 32 years of the existence of the hospital whereas Edo North was yet to occupy the position.

According to the statement “There has been a systematic marginalization of Edo North senatorial district in the appointment of qualified medical professionals to the position of Chief Executive of UBTH, since its establishment such that no Edo North son has ever been appointed as the Chief Medical Director.

“Edo North has many competent medical professionals in UBTH. The interview conducted last week threw up an astute, visionary and distinguished Edo North son, Prof. Idogun, a professor of Chemical Pathology, whose name alongside two others had been forwarded to the presidency for confirmation as the chief Medical Director of the hospital.

“Consequently, we resolved to demand for the appointment by the acting President of Prof. Sylvester Idogun who distinguished himself in the interview as the CMD of the hospital in the interest of justice, equity and fair play,” it stated.
