EDO STATE GOVERNMENT MUST WAKE-UP AND RISE TO THE OCCASION OF PROTECTING LIVES AND PROPERTIES IN THE STATE:
Professor Otasowie of the Electrical Engineering Department of University of Benin was shot dead yesterday near his house along Ekenwan Road, Benin City, in a suspected kidnap attempt that went wrong. Imagine that. Another premature death of a worthy citizen! Life now has little premium attached to it in Edo State. This must stop.
The basic duty of every government is to protect lives and properties. Obaseki's regime has certainly not done enough in ensuring the security of Nigerian citizens living in the State. There appears to be no serious efforts to deal with this. The hoodlums know this and are taking advantage of this. It is known that a kidnapping cartel exists in the Gelegele axis and uses Ekenwan road as an out let on land as well as the connected rivers as water outlet. Previous governments seem to have dealt with their activities. They may be back to business in collusion with other groups.
It is known that there has been plenty of dislocation in the social system; CDA boys are home, Transport union boys are out of work, local contractors are out of business etc. Indeed, there is inadequate business patronage for the local business people that would allow for circulation of money in the local system. Even the environment created by the government is too hostile for the survival of locals.
Any government that has implemented such policies should anticipate and prepare for the fallout. There seem to have been no readiness for the consequences of these dislocations. How can Government think that any type of policy can be implemented without putting measures in place to cushion policy effects.
Who is the security adviser or coordinator to Edo State Government? If they have none, they must appoint one immediately. Edo is not a new State. It has been run by previous governments. They have strategic information on the crime history of the State and how it can be dealt with. They know that the State is accessible to the rest of Nigeria by road and water. They should seek help from those with real time information on the ground, instead of these laptop carrying technocrats from Lagos or wherever pretending to be running the State with modern technology while Edo citizens are caught in a kidnapping quagmire which has led to the death of innocent citizens and foisted a state fear across the State.
This must not be allowed to continue. We must all speak out against the worsening crime situation in Edo State irrespective of political, social and religious divide. Crime is crime. Death is death. When it comes, it does not know APC, PDP or whatever party that people belong to. It does not care whether you are a Christian or Muslim. It prematurely takes away professors and ordinary people alike. It is that bad!
This government must wake up and rise to the occasion forthwith!
