London: Ogida Health Centre Benin-City to Get Continuous Support from Benin Union UK after a Success
There has been a constant request from senior quarters in Benin City to the Edo Diaspora UK that they disclose what assistance they are rendering to Edo State and Edo youths from their fanciful UK position. Building houses and opening businesses for personal gain does not count in this remit.
Various old school Edo alumnis, unions and associations in the UK have explained that boreholes, generators, windows, tables, chairs, books, food and provisions have been supplied by the diaspora to support schools and orphanages in Benin City . However, having spoken to the Iyase of Benin, he advised that such efforts go unrecorded because they do not show the required structure or unity expected. Personal help for a school or an orphanage home go unnoticed because neither the helper nor those helped inform the necessary authority of what they are doing.
Things were done properly in London on 11th November 2017 when Benin Union UK under the leadership of the current president Mr William Okeaya Inneh held a heritage fund raiser to assist Ogida Health Centre Benin City with much needed materials in order to be able to serve the people of Benin- City with Healthcare.
The night was grand and colourful. On the high table was the Odionwere-in-Council, UK & Ireland, the Odionwere himself, Pa Bernard Woghiren, and the chairman of the Occasion, Dr Taiwo Idemudia. There was great cultural entertainment provided by Edo Heartbeat and Edo Catholic Cultural community. Good music from DJ Choplife and a lively host in Mr Dave Omoregie. The crowd was united for a great cause. Donations came from everywhere, the Chairman, Professor Ebohon, Dr Orunwense, The Afemai Union UK, Itsekiri community UK, Urhobo Community UK UPU, Akugbe Club UK, Diamond Ladies Club, Bini Voice, Compatriot Club, Uniben Alumni president, in fact if the host called your name you made a contribution. There was enough good food and maybe the only complication was to sell the drinks which I believe was done to help people consume less due to driving regulations and also as many people also brought their families to witness the great Benin culture.
President William Okeaya Inneh told Edo connect that Benin Union UK has been supporting Ogida Health Centre for over 3 years. The Centre was built by Unesco under a UN Programme but has been abandoned with no equipment or facilities since its completion. Benin Union has put in beds, tables, chairs, fridges and fans. The government has midwives working there now who can check blood pressure and take care of first line illnesses. Whatever is beyond them is referred to the central hospital in Benin-city. Mr Inneh said monies raised tonight will enable them to fence the centre and provide some much-needed equipment.
He thanked everyone for their wonderful support. Please see pictures of the night in the gallery below
The day was special as It was also the birthday of the first Odionwere of UK & Ireland, Pa Bernard Eguagie Woghiren we wish you a happy birthday, good health and continuous prosperity.
