Benins Issue a Stark Warning to Ijaw Militants For Purported "21-Day Ultimatum"
Ijaw Militants’ Purported ‘21-Day Ultimatum’ To Edo State Government And To His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, Oba Of Benin
The Odionwere Council of Benins in UK and Ireland’s attention has been drawn to a public statement credited to one Keme Boudiwei and his associate, Seimokoromor Anthony, supposedly issued in Newpot, Nigeria on 8th December, 2017 and currently circulating in social media with the title “Ijaw Freedom Fighters give Edo Government, Oba of Benin 21-day ultimatum to apologize to Ijaw nation” Benins in diaspora take any threat to our people or any disparagement of His Royal Majesty, Omo N' Oba N' Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba of Benin extremely seriously. We advise, in the interest of peace and harmony, Ijaws who issued this provocative statement to withdraw the threat and apologise, unreservedly and immediately, to His Royal Majesty, Oba of Benin. We call on all State and Federal law enforcement agencies to liaise with their counterparts in Rivers, Edo, Bayelsa, Ondo, Delta and Akwa-Ibom States where these miscreant Ijaw Youths say they are based, to fully investigate and bring to justice those behind this abominable and sacrilegious threat to the authority of His Royal Majesty, Oba of Benin. No attempt to disturb the peace in the Benin kingdom will be tolerated. We unequivocally condemn the sacrilege of that circular as we condemn the recent illegal attempt to install a so-called ‘Pere of Olodiama Kingdom’ in Ovia North East local government area of Edo South despite the Supreme Court ruling of 3rd, September 1986, which confirmed the Benin monarch and his Kingdom as the authoritative traditional institution for all Benin land in Edo state. The pretence coronation of a ‘Pere of Olodiama Kingdom’ is provocative and is a breach of existing customary laws of Edo State. It is also a criminal offence. No persons may install a traditional ruler except as provided for under the laws of the state. There can be no doubt this was a devious attempt to orchestrate the breakdown of Law and Order in our dear State. We wish to state unequivocally that there is only one monarch in Edo South senatorial district, who is the Oba of Benin. Both Ovia North East Local Government Area and Ovia Southwest Local Government Area, including Gelegele, are part of the Oba of Benin’s domain. Since there could be no two monarchs in Benin Kingdom, the title, ‘Pere of Olodiama’ could not exist under the law. Furthermore, we use this medium to warn the leaders, elders, youths and the entire Ijaw community living in Ovia Local Government Areas that there would be painful consequences for fanning the embers of trouble in the Benin Kingdom or for attempting illegal usurpation of authority in the ancient kingdom. We particularly call on all citizens and residents of Ovia North East Local Government Area to maintain peace, remain Law abiding and to report all actual and potential breaches of peace to Edo State Government or the nearest Law Enforcement Agency.
