Trump Bids to Strip ‘Born in the USA’ Rights
DONALD TRUMP wants to end the constitutional right to citizenship for babies born in the US.
It is unclear if the president has the right to overrule the 14th amendment of the constitution that grants citizenship to all children born in the country.
But Mr Trump claims he could make an executive order. With midterm elections next week, he is highlighting his hardline immigration policies as he seeks to energise his supporters and help Republicans keep control of Congress.
‘We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the US,’ he told Axios on HBO.
Asked about the legality of unilaterally revoking birthright citizenship, which would spark a court fight, Mr Trump said: ‘They’re saying I can do it just with an executive order.’
He has sent extra troops to the Mexican border as a caravan of up to 7,000 Central American migrants intent on reaching the US approaches.
