Why is There "NO Southerner" in PDP Presidential Race

September 3, 2018

Aspirants for PDP candidacy and Presidential aspirants for 2019 in Nigeria 2018: According to NaijaNews the list of those who are willing to tussle for the seat of President Muhammadu Buhari come 2019 has already 40 names. I often ask myself why no single aspirant from southern Nigeria has the chance to clinch the PDP candidacy for the presidential elections scheduled by INEC for February 2019 ? Are there no suitable and capable PDP candidates from the South?

I can understand that the APC doesn´t put forward a challenger against their own man, incumbent President Buhari, in 2019 - BUT the PDP as an opposition party could give a candidate from the South( for example from the South East- Donald Duke for example comes to my mind). With a national conception of politics, such a candidate has the same chances to try to topple the incumbent President , born in Katsina State in Northern Nigeria, who holds an APC "party membership card". With Sowore Omoyele, we already have a party candidate(African Action Congress-AAC) for Presidency with a national and not regional conception, who was born in Ondo state in the South West. The other young and eligible potential candidates like Donald Duke(PDP)- Ikubese, Durotoye("Consensus candidate" of the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together/PACT) and others- have weak or no party basis at all. The sympathic and the only female candidate in 2015, under the platform of the KOWA party, Remi Sonaiya, born in the South West, or Peter Obi(APGA), born in the South East, have only slim chances of getting elected in 2019. The man any candidate from the opposition parties and groups have to beat in 2019 is the incumbent, President Buhari- a task that will not be light for whoever comes out to be candidate after the party primaries!
